Yeshayahu Scheinfeld commenced his artistic practice only in 1969, at the age of sixty. During this initial period, he concealed his emerging drive for artistic expression, working discreetly in the early morning or late-night hours, when no one else was around.
In 1970, following his participation in a group exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Scheinfeld was rapidly recognized as a prominent figure within the local tradition of naïve and self-taught art. Although his oeuvre is largely devoted to representations of the Israeli landscape, Scheinfeld rendered these scenes through a distinctive mosaic-like visual structure that soon came to constitute his signature stylistic device. His preferred materials were tempera and ink on board, yet his artistic exploration extended across a variety of techniques, including acrylic on canvas, hand-colored etchings, mixed-media collage, and even textile-based work.
Between 1971 and 1975, Scheinfeld achieved substantial international visibility. His works were exhibited not only throughout Israel but also across Europe and North America. In 1975, his vibrant pen-and-ink composition “Aqueduct” was selected for inclusion in UNICEF’s New Year Round collection, further consolidating his global recognition.
Following his passing in 1979 and continuing to the present day, Scheinfeld’s artworks have remained part of the exhibition programs of galleries and museums in Israel and around Europe. Although his artistic career spanned merely a decade, his contributions were posthumously acknowledged in 2004 by INSITA -the International Triennial of Naïve and Self-Taught Art – which designated him as one of four exceptional artists whose work significantly influenced the international development of naïve art in the 20th century.
